Members of the Tea Party Nation e-mail list received an astonishing e-mail this afternoon, naming, rebutting, and attacking their critics. Sherry Phillips’s email is posted after the jump. Judson and I have stayed silent in the face of intense media scrutiny and attacks by former members. As a wife and a mother, I have stood by my husband and family and stayed strong in the face of many baseless accusations and criticism. We have refrained from responding to many of the attacks that have been thrown at us from other “Tea Party” groups, in the belief we did not want to spread the divisions that are already hurting this movement even though that does not seem to be the consideration of some others involved in this movement. Because of the many TPN members’ requests and encouragement, I have decided to provide comment about Tea Party Nation and the National Tea Party Convention. We will stay silent no longer. I hope my comments and the issues I deal with in this note will provide some clarity. American Liberty Alliance – Eric Odom’s American Liberty Alliance is a for profit company that takes donations. We agreed to a sponsorship exchange where ALA would be a gold sponsor of the convention and we would be a gold sponsor of the Tax Day Tea Party. Shortly after agreeing to this exchange, Eric emailed Judson and me privately saying he was supportive of us and this convention and did not want to pull out, because he thinks this convention is going to be a huge success; however, some his “influential supporters” were not happy about ALA’s participation in the convention and asked Eric to withdraw. American Majority – After stating in the beginning they wanted to co-sponsor the convention, they never answered repeated emails sent asking them for confirmation of their attendance. They did not promote the convention and did not put the convention on their calendar. In fact Ned Ryun spent 5 minutes in an interview on Fox News talking about the Tea Party movement and did not mention the convention at all. Meanwhile, another training organization contacted us asking if they could become a sponsor and if they could do a breakout session. We gladly accepted and gave them American Majority’s spots. On January 6, Ned’s assistant sent an email stating she was making travel arrangements for them to come and participate in the convention and asked when did we have their breakouts scheduled. I told her because of their non-response, we gave American Majority’s slots to this other organization. They then requested that their logo be removed from the Convention website. We complied with their request. Tea Party Express – This group has been very supportive of us. They intended to do a small tour, culminating in an event Saturday afternoon prior to the banquet. Because of their efforts in the Scott Brown race and their intent to go after Harry Reid in Nevada, they simply cannot make the trip. We received a very nice email from them explaining their actions and restating their invitation to join them when they kick off their next tour in March. We will be there. We fully support their endeavors as they open their next tour in Nevada this spring. Campaign for Liberty – We actively sought out Campaign for Liberty as a sponsor of this convention. We were contacted several weeks ago by the TN Director for CFL who wanted to co-sponsor the convention and I put him in touch with our Sponsorship Chair. We have not heard anything from them since. Former Tea Party Nation Members – Several former members were unanimously banned from our site for reasons running the gamut from antagonism to passing on confidential information. These members have been blogging, as well as discussing their association with liberal media outlets and conspiring with each other to, “Take TPN and this convention down”. In one of their more egregious statements a former member wrote that Judson stated, “I want to make a million dollars from this movement.” Judson has never made this statement. He has stated on numerous occasions that he would like TPN to have a million members all fighting for the cause of conservatism! Bill Hemrick – Mr. Hemrick made a business loan to Tea Party Nation at a commercial interest rate. This loan has been paid back in full. That is the full extent of any relationship we have had with Mr. Hemrick. Congressmen Bachmann and Blackburn – Both Congresswomen have large targets on their backs and are rightfully concerned about backlash they will receive from the left-leaning Democrat controlled House Ethics Committee. Because of the complexity of the Ethics Code regarding House Representatives, we have no doubt the Democrats would have found something in that code to cause them problems once the convention was over. We were also informed by Rep. Bachmann that both were being told two different things by the House Ethics Committee in regard to their participation. This of course sent up red flags to everyone involved. We do not blame either Congressman for their decision to withdraw from the convention and maintain a strong relationship with them both. Tea Party Nation – Last February after Judson held one of the first tea parties in the country in downtown Nashville, he came up with the idea for a social networking site for conservatives. Judson and I created Tea Party Nation. We formed the corporation. We financed the corporation. We bought the domain name teapartynation.com , we purchased the servers and we pay for the monthly expenses. We are a C-Corp and do not accept donations. Tea Party Nation charges nothing to be a member and is run entirely by volunteers. Recently, we have been able to start charging for advertising on the site to help defray the costs of running the site. As TPN has stated since its formation, we are not a non-profit. We prefer to offer free membership to conservative patriots so they may participate in the political process of restoring this nation to its founding principles without financial burdens, hardships or roadblocks to prevent their participation. Members are then able to choose their own way to spend their money without any involvement from TPN. PayPal Account – We are using a business PayPal account for the convention. An email address is required to notify a contact when payment is received and we are using my TPN email account at sherry@teapartynation.com as that notification email address. All money in that account is transferred directly into the TPN business bank account. We fully expect to break even during this event. We may even make a few thousand dollars to cover local operating costs of TPN. We have made the best of a tight budget and scaled back the price of attending this convention as much as we could without putting TPN into bankruptcy. The convention is sold out and we have a waiting list of over five hundred people. We never did this to make us rich or famous. Quite the contrary, we are patriots who love our country, our members and the people who are coming to Nashville to attend this great event. For all of you who will be attending, we look forward to meeting you this upcoming week and we thank everyone for the support and patriotism in this fight against liberalism. God bless you all and I thank you for your prayers and words of encouragement.

RNC ‘Purity Test’ Withdrawn
01/29/10

New York Terror Trial ‘Unraveling’
01/29/10
For a one-stop compendium of how the prospects for trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City for his role in 9/11 have deteriorated , ProPublica’s Dafna Linzer has you covered . What remains interesting: There has yet to be any effort by any New Yorker skeptical of holding the trial in Manhattan to stop KSM’s criminal trial. The objection is the venue . One dissent from the New Yorker chorus of KSM panic: Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) , who argued today that New Yorkers are looking weak by biting their nails over KSM.

This nugget from Jake Sherman and Patrick O’Connor’s preview of the House GOP retreat deserves more attention. [House Minority Leader John] Boehner has told his rank and file to embrace the so-called tea party movement “because it will be critical as we proceed,” according to excerpts from his remarks. I’ve been reporting for months on how, despite the non-partisan origins of the movement, the Tea Party will inevitably do the GOP more good than the Democrats. And the the GOP is aware of this.

Midday Harold Fact-Checking
01/29/10
It’s Friday, so it’s time for another amusingly tone-deaf Harold Ford, Jr. interview. This one , in the New York Post, got me wondering whether Ford had New York connections we didn’t previously know about. I was here in college days and always knew New York is where I want to be. Did Ford go to college in New York? No. He has a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. So he, like plenty of people who aren’t running for Senate, visited New York City at some point in his teens or twenties.

James O’Keefe has issued a statement on his arrest in Louisiana, portraying himself as a maligned investigative journalist who was merely trying to see whether the phones worked in Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-La.) office. I learned from a number of sources that many of Senator Landrieu’s constituents were having trouble getting through to her office to tell her that they didn’t want her taking millions of federal dollars (sic) in exchange for her vote on the healthcare bill. When asked about this, Senator Landrieu’s explanation was that, “Our lines have been jammed for weeks.” I decided to investigate why a representative of the people would be out of touch with her constituents for “weeks” because her phones were broken. In investigating this matter, we decided to visit Senator Landrieu’s district office – the people’s office – to ask the staff if their phones were working. I noted an error in the statement — the controversy is not over whether Landrieu is “taking millions of federal dollars,” but why the Senate added $300 million in Medicaid subsidies that stood to benefit Louisiana. That’s a legitimate issue — O’Keefe, trying to clear the air, bends it into a bribery smear. That, and his use of the statement to demand retractions from “reporters who can’t get their facts straight,” indicate that he’s going to fight this out. The full statement: The government has now confirmed what has always been clear: No one tried to wiretap or bug Senator Landrieu’s office. Nor did we try to cut or shut down her phone lines. Reports to this effect over the past 48 hours are inaccurate and false. As an investigative journalist, my goal is to expose corruption and lack of concern for citizens by government and other institutions, as I did last year when our investigations revealed the massive corruption and fraud perpetrated by ACORN. For decades, investigative journalists have used a variety of tactics to try to dig out and reveal the truth. I learned from a number of sources that many of Senator Landrieu’s constituents were having trouble getting through to her office to tell her that they didn’t want her taking millions of federal dollars in exchange for her vote on the healthcare bill. On reflection, I could have used a different approach to this investigation, particularly given the sensitivities that people understandably have about security in a federal building. The sole intent of our investigation was to determine whether or not Senator Landrieu was purposely trying to avoid constituents who were calling to register their views to her as their Senator. We video taped the entire visit, the government has those tapes, and I’m eager for them to be released because they refute the false claims being repeated by much of the mainstream media. It has been amazing to witness the journalistic malpractice committed by many of the organizations covering this story. MSNBC falsely claimed that I violated a non-existent “gag order.” The Associated Press incorrectly reported that I “broke in” to an office which is open to the public. The Washington Post has now had to print corrections in two stories on me. And these are just a few examples of inaccurate and false reporting. The public will judge whether reporters who can’t get their facts straight have the credibility to question my integrity as a journalist.
I reported yesterday that the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco was putting on a lecture by alleged phone-tamperer James O’Keefe on “undercover journalism.” According to Commonwealth Club spokeswoman Riki Rafner, the event is still on for Monday, although “things can change.”

Palin, Still Tea Partying
01/29/10
The governor-turned-Fox News pundit tells Greta Van Susteren that she’s still headlining the embattled National Tea Party Convention next week. Oh, you betcha I’m going to be there. I’m going to speak there because there are people traveling from many miles away to hear what that tea party movement is all about and what that message is that should be received by our politicians in Washington. I’m honored to get to be there. I won’t personally gain from being there. The speaker’s fee will go right back into the cause. I’ll be able to donate it to people and to events, those things that I believe in that will help perpetuate the message, the message being, Government, you have constitutional limits. You better start abiding by them. Palin doesn’t have the out that Michele Bachmann and Martha Blackburn had–as a former office-holder, she has no lobbying/ethics hurdles to jump over. The unfolding drama and scandal of this convention, though, make her decision to attend it while bitterly blowing off CPAC seem less and less astute.

Under a new policy announced today by CIA director Leon Panetta, an intelligence officer can’t be promoted to the agency’s highest rank — the Senior Intelligence Service — without a demonstrated proficiency in a foreign language. From a CIA release: While many senior Agency officers have tested proficient in a foreign language over the course of their careers, some have not kept their skills current. Under the new policy, promotions to SIS for most analysts and operations officers will be contingent on demonstrating foreign language competency. If an officer is promoted to SIS and does not meet the foreign language requirement within one year, he or she will return to their previous, lower grade. This is a powerful incentive to maintain and improve skills critical to the Agency’s global mission. Languages play a key role in the CIA’s work at all career levels. “The stricter requirement for SIS promotion,” said Panetta, “is meant to ensure that leadership on this vital initiative comes from the executive level. With an unwavering commitment from SIS officers—to both lead by example and to support language proficiency at all levels—we will reach not only our language goals, but our ultimate objective: an Agency that is better positioned to protect our nation in the years ahead.”

GOP Rep. Buyer Calls It Quits

Via The Hill , Rep. Steve Buyer will announce today that he won’t seek reelection this year. The nine-term Indiana Republican has been in hot water recently over allegations that his charity, the Frontier Foundation, has acted simply as a vehicle for siphoning campaign contributions from corporate leaders. Earlier this week, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Congress filed ethics complaints against both Buyer and the Frontier Foundation. Local news is reporting that he wants to spend more time with his family.

A Green al-Qaeda?
01/29/10
When Osama bin Laden is so desperate for international support that he’ll start making an environmentalist case against the United States , something is going very right. Still, Get Energy Smart Now is trying to stop the stupidity before it starts : Turning the world back to the 12th century, including killing off perhaps 95 percent or so of the world’s population supportable without modern technology and with women suppressed without health care (dying in child birth), might well actually address “climate change” in an incredibly dystopian and immoral fashion. (Oops, moral in your distorted lens on the world.) … That bin Laden is able to, via his distorted lens, gain a glimpse of reality and understand that climate change is a serious issue meriting attention doesn’t suddenly make climate change unreal even though there will be those who seize on this to say things like “bin Laden is against it, therefore I’m for it …” The path “to stop” climate change is not to “bring the wheels of the American economy” to a halt, but to turn those wheels toward the creation of a clean-energy future … to help Saudi Arabia turn itself into the “Saudi Arabia of Solar Power” … to aid Afghanis prosper with micro-hydro and wind power and efficient lighting … to tap geothermal power in nation’s around the world …

From The Associated Press : Scott Brown says he has already told Senate Republican leaders they won’t always be able to count on his vote. “I already told them, you know, ‘I got here with the help of a close group of friends and very little help from anyone down there, so there’ll be issues when I’ll be with you and there are issues when I won’t be with you,’” Brown said Thursday during the half-hour interview. “So, I just need to look at each vote and then make a proper analysis and then decide.” A radical idea in polarized Washington.

From one human rights champion to another, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) just issued a statement on yesterday’s passing of Howard Zinn, praising the former Spelman College historian as one “who not only wrote history but lived and made history.” [I]t was his voice crying out, speaking out, organizing teach-ins against the war in Vietnam that had a major impact on mobilizing people all across America in the work to end our involvement in South East Asia. The death of Howard Zinn is a tremendous loss to a generation of young people who came to know him and love him as a teacher, but also as a friend. Zinn, 87, died Wednesday of a heart attack.

While the Salt Lake City Republican Party responded to the arrest of James O’Keefe by canceling his scheduled speech at an upcoming fundraiser, the embattled anti-ACORN muckraker is still scheduled to give a speech on “undercover journalism” at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. The event, which includes blogger Josh Wolf (who went to jail for not handing over video of protesters), is billed this way on the Club’s site: “ A renegade insider shares his methods that revealed some unbecoming behaviors of a public-interest giant.” Could O’Keefe still appear at this event after a judge ordered him to stay with his parents in New Jersey until the next hearing? I’ve called the Commonwealth Club to find out whether the event will be scrapped; a voicemail message listing current changes and cancellations did not mention the O’Keefe event.

The Honolulu Backlash
01/28/10
The RNC’s decision to meet in Honolulu for its conference struck me as pretty defensible, given the surprise special congressional election that will be taking place in the state when Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) retires next month. But Jonathan Martin found skeptics high up in the GOP firmament who view the location choice as an expensive waste. Asked about the meeting location, one veteran party strategist expressed a mix of bemusement and annoyance by simply replying with a YouTube link to a Don Ho video.
