James O’Keefe has issued a statement on his arrest in Louisiana, portraying himself as a maligned investigative journalist who was merely trying to see whether the phones worked in Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-La.) office. I learned from a number of sources that many of Senator Landrieu’s constituents were having trouble getting through to her office to tell her that they didn’t want her taking millions of federal dollars (sic) in exchange for her vote on the healthcare bill. When asked about this, Senator Landrieu’s explanation was that, “Our lines have been jammed for weeks.” I decided to investigate why a representative of the people would be out of touch with her constituents for “weeks” because her phones were broken. In investigating this matter, we decided to visit Senator Landrieu’s district office – the people’s office – to ask the staff if their phones were working. I noted an error in the statement — the controversy is not over whether Landrieu is “taking millions of federal dollars,” but why the Senate added $300 million in Medicaid subsidies that stood to benefit Louisiana. That’s a legitimate issue — O’Keefe, trying to clear the air, bends it into a bribery smear. That, and his use of the statement to demand retractions from “reporters who can’t get their facts straight,” indicate that he’s going to fight this out. The full statement: The government has now confirmed what has always been clear: No one tried to wiretap or bug Senator Landrieu’s office. Nor did we try to cut or shut down her phone lines. Reports to this effect over the past 48 hours are inaccurate and false. As an investigative journalist, my goal is to expose corruption and lack of concern for citizens by government and other institutions, as I did last year when our investigations revealed the massive corruption and fraud perpetrated by ACORN. For decades, investigative journalists have used a variety of tactics to try to dig out and reveal the truth. I learned from a number of sources that many of Senator Landrieu’s constituents were having trouble getting through to her office to tell her that they didn’t want her taking millions of federal dollars in exchange for her vote on the healthcare bill. On reflection, I could have used a different approach to this investigation, particularly given the sensitivities that people understandably have about security in a federal building. The sole intent of our investigation was to determine whether or not Senator Landrieu was purposely trying to avoid constituents who were calling to register their views to her as their Senator. We video taped the entire visit, the government has those tapes, and I’m eager for them to be released because they refute the false claims being repeated by much of the mainstream media. It has been amazing to witness the journalistic malpractice committed by many of the organizations covering this story. MSNBC falsely claimed that I violated a non-existent “gag order.” The Associated Press incorrectly reported that I “broke in” to an office which is open to the public. The Washington Post has now had to print corrections in two stories on me. And these are just a few examples of inaccurate and false reporting. The public will judge whether reporters who can’t get their facts straight have the credibility to question my integrity as a journalist.

It doesn’t appear so, according to Greg Jaffe’s preview of the Pentagon’s investigatio n: A high-level Pentagon inquiry into the Fort Hood shootings that left 13 people dead has concluded that the military should focus more resources on identifying service members who might pose a threat to their colleagues and outlines a series of steps the Pentagon should take to prevent future attacks, Pentagon officials said. According to Jaffe’s piece for The Washington Post, the report — expected to be released on Thursday — will recommend the Defense Department “to ensure that it fully staffs FBI-run Joint Terrorism Task Forces so that information collected by other government agencies about potential contacts between troops and terrorist groups is shared promptly with the Defense Department.” We’ll know more on Thursday, but it appears for now like Gen. George Casey’s call not to stigmatize American Muslim soldiers has been embraced by the panel, led by ex-Army Secretary Togo West and ret. Adm. Vern Clark. Good for them .

More details are emerging about those five young Virginia men arrested in Pakistan . According to Pakistani authorities, they may have been arrested at a safehouse for an anti-Indian terrorist group. But that was a way station to fighting their countrymen in Afghanistan, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal report. The Journal: In the latest case, information from laptop computers and other material suggest the five men reached out to al Qaeda, the militant network operating from the tribal region bordering Afghanistan, said a Pakistani intelligence official. The men came in contact with al Qaeda through its local operatives, he said. Police found jihadist literature at the house where the men were arrested, as well as maps of cities and installations — suggesting they could have been planning attacks in Pakistan, said Usman Anwar, police chief of Sargodha. The Post: U.S. officials said they are exploring possible criminal charges in a case that has morphed from a missing-person investigation prompted by concerned family members in the Alexandria area, who contacted the FBI. “To prove something in a U.S. court requires meticulous effort, so we want to be cautious and careful not to characterize anyone as a terrorist unless and until we are certain that charges can be filed,” said one official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing. I’ll have more soon on the question of growing domestic radicalization.

Pakistanis Say Arrested Virginia Men Were Going to Fight in Afghanistan
Three days and four hearings on the ground views of Afghanistan-Pakistan strategy have just ended. And there are still a number of questions that have gone answered. Here are a few. 1. What’s the relationship between Operation Cobra’s Anger And Population Security? Matthew Yglesias tweeted this question to me and it occurred to me I didn’t know the answer. Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s entire strategy is based on securing population areas. Cobra’s Anger is the current Marine offensive in the volatile southern province of Helmand . Helmand, as this somewhat outdated map shows , is anything but a population-dense area — but the province does, however, account for 50 percent of Afghanistan’s poppy production . So is Cobra’s Anger the exception from the population-security rule? And for that matter: 2. Which population areas will be secured? No one so much as asked McChrystal to answer this one. I couldn’t tell you what the criteria are. 3. Will U.S. forces transition security to Afghans while Pakistani safe havens for al-Qaeda still exist? Signs point to yes. But no one directly asked this question, and accordingly, neither McChrystal nor Ambassador Karl Eikenberry nor Gen. David Petraeus answered. McChrystal ducked a cousin of this question , though. 4. How long will this war last; and how much will it cost? What, you thought you’d get answers to those questions? At least Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) tried . 5. What will stop the Community Defense Initiative from yielding militias and warlords? McChrystal professed, a lot , to awareness of the hazards of partnering with local militias outside the bounds of the Afghan army and police. But he didn’t explain how he’d mitigate those risks. 6. What is happening in Bagram’s “Black Jail”? No one even came within 100 yards of asking this question . McChrystal said his ultimate goal was to transition his detention facilities to Afghan control. But what’s happening inside them in the meantime went unaddressed, particularly when it comes to these credible concerns — not proof, but credible reasons for further investigation — of ongoing detainee abuse. I’m probably forgetting some, so remind me in comments.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), in an interview with Politico , today: [Cantor] expressed frustration with [Speaker of the House Nancy] Pelosi’s suggestion last week that the vitriol injected into the health reform debate could end in violence akin to the assassination of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone in the 1970s. “I think she’s living in another world — I really do,” Cantor said of the California Democrat. “I’m not condoning any of the things that, you know, the media may catch in terms of messages on the signs and what have you. But I have not run into any violence. I have not run into crowds running over people. We should want spirited debate, although civil, … and I’ve not been anywhere over the last several months where I would even think such a situation where violence is in the offing exists.” The Associated Press , one hour ago: The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery, and a law enforcement official told The Associated Press the word ‘fed” was scrawled on the dead man’s chest. The body of Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old part-time Census field worker and occasional teacher, was found Sept. 12 in a remote patch of the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky. The Census has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County, where the body was found, pending the outcome of the investigation. Investigators are still trying to determine whether the death was a killing or a suicide, and if a killing, whether the motive was related to his government job or to anti-government sentiment. What’s my point? Obviously Cantor isn’t wrong about the peaceful tone of most Tea Parties and related events. But betting against any political violence, at any time, and accusing those who warn of it of being on “another world?”
